Description
This painting is part of a special collection titled “Working on Myself.”
I was with a friend that I hadn’t seen for a while and she said that in the past year she had been doing “a lot of work on myself.” She said it in a way that sounded like taking time for herself and taking care of herself. It made me think about the current idea of self care and how true self care often involves hard work to examine emotional scars, personal weaknesses, and being truthful with yourself. The series started with me thinking about scaffolding in a torso and how we build ourselves up. I added sacred spaces and passageways to show the spiritual journey that we go through as we navigate caring for ourselves in this life while also tending to those around us.
Skill is something I’ve thought a lot about in the past few years. One of the things that motivated me to become an artist was learning that even people with talent spent hours and hours honing their craft. And people without talent will improve greatly by learning and improving their skill.
